A milestone birthday deserves more than a table at the same old bar. You can hold a birthday party in Warsaw somewhere your guests will remember: on a bowling lane, in an escape room, on a boat sailing down the Vistula, in the audience at a musical or on a private tram rolling through the city at night.
We’ve gathered ideas for three popular milestones – an 18th, a 30th and a 40th birthday – because each one plays by slightly different rules. At the end you’ll find a sample plan for a surprise party and answers to the most common questions.
How to choose a birthday venue
- Number of guests – some places work for 10 people, others for 40, and the headcount also decides whether you need a venue to yourselves.
- Type of party – active fun, dinner and conversation, or dancing until dawn?
- Getting there – a venue in the centre or near the metro makes life easier for guests coming from outside Warsaw.
- The rest of the night – check where nearby you can keep the party going.
Ideas for an 18th birthday
In Poland, the 18th marks coming of age, and it’s often the first big party organised on your own terms. The best venues are those where there’s more going on than sitting around a table.
1. A bowling alley with lanes to yourselves
A few reserved lanes, team rivalry and snacks between throws – bowling brings together guests who are only just getting to know each other. Many bowling alleys also have pool tables and a spot where you can put the cake.
2. An escape room or laser tag
Teams, a race against the clock and plenty of laughs. The capital has a wide choice of escape rooms and laser tag arenas, so it’s easy to find a place where a dozen or more people can play at the same time in several teams.
3. Karaoke in a private room
A karaoke room of your own is a stage just for your group – no strangers listening and no queue for the mic. It works brilliantly in the second half of the evening, once everyone has warmed up.
Ideas for a 30th birthday
A 30th usually brings together friends from different stages of life. It helps if the venue is an attraction in itself and lets you celebrate, talk and dance all at once.
4. A boat trip on the Vistula
You can hire a boat on the Vistula for a private cruise – some of them set off from the boulevards near the Copernicus Science Centre. A toast with a view of the city skyline is a great start to the evening, and afterwards it’s easy to move on to the bars in Powiśle.
5. A cocktail workshop and dinner in a food hall
Warm up with a lesson from a bartender, then have dinner in a food hall where everyone can find something they like, such as Hala Koszyki or Fabryka Norblina (the Norblin Factory). You’ll find more places like these in our list of things to do in Warsaw.
6. A night at a club in a Praga courtyard
For those who prefer atmosphere to glitz: the tenements on Ząbkowska Street and the courtyard at 11 Listopada 22, where the Hydrozagadka club has been hosting concerts and parties for years. Book a table at a nearby bar to start with, then move closer to the stage.
Ideas for a 40th birthday
A 40th is a good moment to focus on quality: good food, culture and a touch of luxury – with the dancing, if there’s to be any, saved for the end.
7. A musical at Teatr Muzyczny Roma
The Roma Musical Theatre on Nowogrodzka Street stages the world’s biggest musical hits. Going to a show together and having dinner afterwards is an elegant way to celebrate with friends – buy tickets for a larger group well in advance.
8. A concert at Stodoła
Stodoła, the concert club on Batorego Street, has roots going back to 1956 and is one of the city’s best-known venues. If the guest of honour has a favourite band, check the line-up – celebrating in front of the stage with your friends makes a memory that lasts for years.
9. A tasting dinner with wine
A tasting menu with wine pairings in a restaurant with a private room is the choice for those who prefer conversation to loud music. For a larger group, ask about a private room and a menu agreed in advance.
For any milestone birthday: a tram party
A private tram works just as well for an 18th as for a 40th, because you decide on the programme. On board, the music plays, the lights flash, the cake and champagne are ready for a toast, and Warsaw by night slides past the windows. A lovely idea is a sentimental route – past the birthday person’s old school, first flat or favourite bar. On the way you can also pass the Palace of Culture and Science, cross the Poniatowski Bridge or ride through the W-Z Route tunnel under the Old Town. You can choose from the Basic, Star and VIP packages, and if you dream of a spectacular finale, we can also help with a fireworks show, a birthday cake or champagne for all your guests. You’ll find the details on our birthday tram parties in Warsaw page.
A sample surprise party plan
- 19:00 – the guests board the tram at the starting stop
- 19:20 – the tram pulls up where the unsuspecting birthday person is waiting
- 19:30 – cake, candles and a champagne toast on board
- 21:00 – the ride ends in the centre, with a drink near the final stop
- 22:00 – an after-party at a club on Mazowiecka Street, in Powiśle or around Nowy Świat
Planning a birthday party in Warsaw: practical tips
- A cover story – for a surprise, agree on one version of events with the guests and stick to it until the very end.
- Bookings – book the tram at least 5 working days before the party, and for weekend dates get in touch much earlier.
- Music – put together a playlist of the birthday person’s favourite songs; with every package you can connect your own music.
