After dark, Wroclaw has a completely different character. An illuminated Rynek (Market Square), a lamplighter lighting gas lamps on Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island), boulevards along the Odra and dozens of bars within a few hundred metres – Wroclaw at night is hard to beat for an evening out with friends.
We’ve gathered the places worth seeing when the city comes alive after sunset: from quiet strolls to clubs that stay open until morning.
The Rynek and around after dark
The Rynek and the Old Town Hall
An evening in Wroclaw is best started on the Rynek, one of the largest medieval market squares in Europe. The Gothic Old Town Hall, the colourful tenement houses and the restaurant terraces look their best after dark. In the cellars of the town hall, Piwnica Świdnicka has been serving guests for centuries – it’s one of the oldest restaurants in Europe.
Plac Solny
Right next to the Rynek is Plac Solny (Salt Square), famous for its flower stalls that are open around the clock. If you need a bouquet for the birthday girl or the bride-to-be at midnight, this is where you’ll find one.
Dwarf hunting
Hundreds of bronze dwarfs live in the centre of Wroclaw. An evening dwarf hunt is great fun for a group – you can hold a contest to see who finds and photographs the most figures in an hour. You’ll find a ready-made route in our article on hunting for the Wroclaw dwarfs.
Ostrów Tumski and the lamplighter
Ostrów Tumski is the oldest part of Wroclaw and the most atmospheric place in the city after dark. Every day before dusk, a lamplighter in a black cape and top hat lights nearly a hundred gas lamps here by hand. It’s one of the few places in Europe where you can still see such a sight.
You reach the island across Most Tumski (Cathedral Bridge), covered in lovers’ padlocks. It’s worth arriving 15 minutes or so before sunset, taking a walk around the Cathedral of St John the Baptist and waiting for the lamplighter.
By the Odra
Wyspa Słodowa and the boulevards
From spring to autumn, Wyspa Słodowa (Słodowa Island) is one of the locals’ favourite meeting places. People sit on the grass by the water, and in the evenings it hosts concerts and open-air events. A stroll along Bulwar Dunikowskiego (Dunikowski Boulevard), with views of illuminated Ostrów Tumski, is a Wroclaw evening classic.
Multimedia fountain at Centennial Hall
In season, the evening shows of the fountain by Hala Stulecia (Centennial Hall) combine water, light and music. It’s a good item on the programme before dinner – check the show schedule before you go.
An evening cruise on the Odra
Wroclaw sits on more than a dozen islands and has over a hundred bridges, so the city looks exceptional from the river. In season, evening cruises on boats and gondolas leave from marinas in the centre – an hour on the water at sunset is a good start to the rest of the evening.
A concert at the National Forum of Music
If you’re looking for a more elegant start to the evening, check what’s on at the NFM (Narodowe Forum Muzyki) on plac Wolności. The concert hall is famous for its acoustics, and after the concert the Rynek is only a few minutes’ walk away.
Where to go for drinks and clubbing
Pasaż Niepolda
This party courtyard at Ruska 51 packs a dozen or so bars and clubs into a small space. Shot bars, dance clubs and pubs here stay open practically until morning, which makes it the natural place for an after-party.
Neon Side
The courtyard at Ruska 46 is an open-air gallery of old Wroclaw neon signs. Dozens of glowing signs make it one of the most photogenic spots in the city.
Św. Mikołaja, Włodkowica and Ofiar Oświęcimskich streets
West of the Rynek, you’ll find music clubs on św. Mikołaja and quieter bars on Włodkowica. Ofiar Oświęcimskich, meanwhile, is a street of cocktail bars and restaurants – a good choice for the start of the evening.
Wroclaw – Poland’s beer capital
Wroclaw has long been famous for its craft beer. Multi-tap bars with dozens of taps and brewpubs are a good plan for a quieter evening – or a warm-up before the club.
A tram party – Wroclaw at night from a different angle
The most unusual way to see Wroclaw at night is from a private party tram. For two hours you ride through the illuminated city with music playing, club lighting on and nobody on board but your group. We agree the route and the final stop with you – for example near the Rynek, close to your after-party.
The tram is ideal for a stag do, a hen party, a birthday or a corporate event in Wroclaw.
Wroclaw nightlife for stag dos and hen parties
Wroclaw by night is one of the most popular choices for stag dos and hen parties. Bars and clubs that stay open until morning are close together, and the short distances between attractions mean you can plan the whole night without taxis. A simple formula works best: dinner, one exclusive main attraction, then the bars around the Rynek.
