Rain doesn’t have to spoil a trip to Wroclaw. The city is full of places where you can spend a few hours somewhere warm and dry – from multimedia museums to an oceanarium with sharks. We’ve rounded up the best indoor attractions for a rainy day in Wroclaw, and they work just as well for a weekend away with friends as for a company trip.
Below you’ll find 10 places, a sample plan for a wet day and some practical tips – plus an idea for an evening that no weather can spoil.
How to plan a rainy day in Wroclaw
It’s best to combine two or three attractions in the same area, so you don’t spend half the day travelling between them. Hydropolis, Hala Targowa (the Market Hall) and the Racławice Panorama are close to the centre, while the Africarium and the Four Domes Pavilion are near Hala Stulecia (Centennial Hall), a few tram stops from the Rynek (Market Square). Break up the museums with coffee and lunch, and save the most engaging items for the afternoon, when the group’s energy starts to flag.
Museums and exhibitions
1. Hydropolis
This centre of knowledge about water, on Na Grobli Street, occupies a former clean-water reservoir dating from 1893, so the interior alone is impressive. The visit begins with a projection about the origins of water in the universe, followed by multimedia rooms, an exhibition on life in the ocean depths and a bathyscaphe modelled on the Trieste. Entry is in half-hourly slots, so buy your tickets online in advance.
2. Afrykarium (the Africarium)
This is the part of Wroclaw Zoo that doesn’t depend on the weather. A one-of-a-kind oceanarium devoted entirely to African wildlife, it’s home to sharks, rays, Nile crocodiles, hippos and manatees, among others. On a cold, wet day it’s one of the best ways to spend a few hours with a group. If the rain eases off even for a moment, take a stroll around the rest of the zoo as well.
3. Panorama Racławicka (the Racławice Panorama)
This enormous canvas, measuring 15 by 114 metres and painted by Jan Styka and Wojciech Kossak, depicts the Battle of Racławice in 1794 and the victory of Tadeusz Kościuszko’s troops. The painting surrounds visitors in a special rotunda on Purkyniego Street – it’s one of the city’s most famous attractions.
4. National Museum and the Four Domes Pavilion
The main building of the Muzeum Narodowe (National Museum) on plac Powstańców Warszawy houses rich art collections. Modern art fans should also visit Pawilon Czterech Kopuł (the Four Domes Pavilion) by Centennial Hall – the museum’s branch devoted to contemporary art, set in a building designed by Hans Poelzig. The pavilion is easy to combine with a visit to the Africarium, as both are in the same part of the city.
5. Pan Tadeusz Museum
In the Pod Złotym Słońcem (Under the Golden Sun) tenement house on the Market Square, the Ossolineum runs a museum devoted to Adam Mickiewicz’s epic poem. It’s a good choice for a rainy hour right in the centre, and here’s a bonus fact: the Ossolineum keeps the original manuscript of Pan Tadeusz, one of the most precious manuscripts in Polish literature.
6. Centrum Historii Zajezdnia (Depot History Centre)
Set in a former bus depot on Grabiszyńska Street, this museum tells the story of post-war Wroclaw – from the almost complete replacement of its population to the changes of the decades that followed. Thousands of photographs, films and multimedia make the exhibition gripping even for people who aren’t keen on museums. The building also hosts concerts, film screenings and workshops.
Indoors, but not a museum
7. Hala Targowa (Market Hall)
This historic market hall from the early 20th century is a good place to spend a rainy morning. Wander between the stalls of fruit, vegetables and spices, pick up snacks for the evening and take a look at the reinforced-concrete structure, which was a daring solution when the hall was built.
8. Aquapark and saunas
An indoor water park with pools and slides is a great plan for a grey day, especially for an active group. Some of you will head for the lanes and slides, others for the relaxation zone – and in the evening everyone meets up again for dinner. Check the opening hours before you set off, and pack flip-flops and a towel before you leave the hotel.
9. Escape rooms, bowling and pool
Escape rooms, bowling alleys and pool halls are a classic choice for a rainy afternoon with a group. Wroclaw has plenty to choose from, but with a bigger group it’s worth booking ahead, especially at weekends. If you have several teams, hold a mini tournament: an escape room to kick off, bowling for the final and one overall leaderboard.
10. A party on a private tram
Your evening can be spent under cover too – and on the move. A private tram with a professional sound system and club lighting takes your group through the city, while wet, glittering streets glide past the windows. The route is agreed individually, and you’ll find all the details on the TramParty Wroclaw page.
