Another dinner at the same restaurant? Not this time. You can hold a birthday party in Gdansk on the water, in a former bunker, in a brewpub beneath Artus Court or on a tram that picks up the birthday boy or girl from a tram stop. This seaside city offers plenty of chances to do something your guests will be talking about for a long time.
We’ve collected unusual birthday ideas for adults – from intimate to full-on party – plus a sample evening plan and answers to the most common questions. You’ll find all the occasions we organise tram parties for on the TramParty Gdansk page.
How to choose your birthday idea
Before you start booking, answer three questions: how many guests will there be, should the party be a surprise, and does the guest of honour prefer a quiet evening or partying until morning? A small group will feel at home at a concert, at the theatre or around a table in a brewpub. With several dozen people, it’s better to go for an exclusive attraction where nobody has to hunt for a free table and everyone has fun together from the first minute to the last.
Unusual ideas for a birthday party in Gdansk
1. A surprise birthday on a party tram
The guests board first, and then the tram, with music and lights, pulls up at the stop where the unsuspecting birthday boy or girl is waiting. You can plan the route past places that matter to them – their old school, their first flat or their favourite bar. There’s room on board for a cake, champagne for a toast and catering, and on request we’ll even help you arrange a fireworks show. You’ll find the details on our birthday parties on a tram in Gdansk page.
2. A cruise on the Motława
Sightseeing boats leave from near the Green Gate, heading to Westerplatte among other destinations. A cruise together, with views of Żuraw (the Crane) and the townhouses on Długie Pobrzeże (the Long Embankment), is a simple way to start a birthday differently. A larger group can ask the operator about a private cruise. Back on dry land, the restaurants on Długie Pobrzeże are just a few steps away, so it’s easy to combine the cruise with dinner.
3. Dinner at the brewpub beneath Artus Court
Piwnica Rajców occupies the historic cellars beneath Artus Court and brews its own beer. For beer lovers, Brovarnia on Szafarnia Street is just as good a choice. For a larger group, book a table in advance and ask whether you can bring your own cake.
4. A concert instead of a party at home
If the birthday boy or girl loves music, check the listings at B90 in the former shipyard, Stary Maneż in Wrzeszcz or the Polish Baltic Philharmonic on Ołowianka island. Concert tickets as a present and a night out with the whole gang make a birthday to remember.
5. A play at the Gdansk Shakespeare Theatre
The Gdansk Shakespeare Theatre has a roof that can be opened, and its stage harks back to the Elizabethan playhouses of old. An evening at the theatre followed by dinner in Główne Miasto (the Main Town) is an elegant option for a milestone birthday, such as a 30th, 40th or 50th.
6. Escape room, karaoke or bowling
For a competitive crowd, an escape room, a bowling alley or a private karaoke room is a great choice. These attractions don’t depend on the weather, usually stay open late and are good at bringing together guests who are only just getting to know each other. At weekends, it’s worth booking slots for larger groups in advance.
7. A beach picnic and a stroll on the pier
In summer you can celebrate on the beach in Brzeźno or Jelitkowo: a blanket, snacks, music from a speaker and an evening walk along the pier. Remember the beach rules and take all your rubbish with you. If the party is going to carry on into the evening, add battery-powered fairy lights and warm hoodies – by the sea it soon gets chilly after sunset.
8. The panorama from Góra Gradowa
For a birthday photo with a view, head up Góra Gradowa (Gradowa Hill). The former fort offers a panorama of the Main Town, and on a clear day you can even see the Bay of Gdansk. It’s a good stop before dinner, or before the tram sets off from near the main railway station close by.
9. A night at a club
To finish, take your guests clubbing. In Gdansk, a truly unique venue is Bunkier Klubogaleria – a club in a former air-raid shelter on Olejarna Street. If you prefer a seaside-resort vibe, head to Sopot, where there’s no shortage of clubs around Monciak, the main promenade. For a larger group, ask in advance about reserving a table or a booth.
Sample birthday plan in Gdansk
- 17:00 – photos with a view of the city from Góra Gradowa
- 18:00 – dinner at a brewpub in the Main Town
- 20:00 – the surprise tram pulls up for the birthday boy or girl
- 20:30 – cake and champagne on board
- 22:00 – the ride ends near the Main Town, followed by an after party at a club
The order is easy to change: the tram can also pick your guests up near the restaurant and take them close to the club. The ride can start from almost any tram stop, so choose one that’s easy for everyone to reach.
Practical tips
- Booking – book the tram at least 5 working days before the party, and weekend dates even earlier.
- Surprise – describe your plan in your enquiry, and we’ll be completely discreet while we arrange the details.
- A gift from the gang – a tram party makes a great joint present from friends or family.
- Dress code – a theme, such as Hawaiian leis or 1980s outfits, instantly lifts the atmosphere and the photos.
