A milestone birthday deserves more than a table at your favourite restaurant. Szczecin offers plenty of less obvious ideas: a party on a moving tram, a harbour cruise, a film at one of the oldest cinemas in the world or dinner in Gothic cellars. If you’re planning a Szczecin birthday party, below you’ll find suggestions for different tastes and budgets.
Each idea can be the main event of your Szczecin birthday party or one of several. At the end you’ll find a sample surprise party plan, practical tips and answers to the most common questions.
How to plan an unusual birthday
Think about who you’re inviting and what the guest of honour would enjoy. For an 18th or 30th birthday, a party with music and dancing works well; for a 40th or 50th, combine a good dinner with an activity your guests will talk about for ages. Decide, too, whether it’s going to be a surprise – if so, discretion and well-planned logistics are key. It’s also worth checking how many guests will be driving and how many will be getting home by public transport or taxi – that makes it easier to choose a venue for the rest of the evening.
Szczecin birthday party ideas with a difference
1. A surprise party on a tram
This idea makes the biggest impression: the guests board first, and the party tram pulls up at the stop where the unsuspecting birthday person is waiting. Then you set off into the city – with music, cake and champagne on board. On request we’ll help decorate the tram and even arrange a fireworks show, while photo coverage and an HD souvenir video will capture the look on their face for years to come. You’ll find the details on our birthday tram party in Szczecin page.
2. A harbour cruise
A birthday on the water is always an occasion. Sightseeing boats leave from below Wały Chrobrego (Chrobry Embankment) for trips around the port, and with a larger group it’s worth asking the operator about chartering a boat for a private party. Every guest will remember a toast with views of Łasztownia and the harbour quays.
3. A film at the Pionier 1907 cinema
The Pionier cinema on al. Wojska Polskiego has been running since 1907 and is one of the oldest cinemas in the world still in operation. One of its screening rooms doubles as a café, which gives it an intimate feel. Watching the birthday person’s favourite film together is an unusual start to the evening – ask the cinema directly about group bookings.
4. Dinner in Gothic cellars
The Wyszak brewery restaurant occupies the cellars of the Old Town Hall, and its spacious Gothic interiors are well suited to get-togethers with friends and family. Beer brewed on site, cooking based on regional produce and the Old Town atmosphere are a recipe for a memorable birthday dinner.
5. A concert at the Philharmonic or an evening at the opera
For an elegant occasion, choose a concert in the golden symphony hall of the Mieczysław Karłowicz Philharmonic or a performance at Opera na Zamku (the Opera at the Castle). Buy group tickets in advance, then head for dinner afterwards – both venues are close to restaurants in the centre and in Podzamcze.
6. An escape room or karaoke
For a competitive crowd, an escape room is a good choice – an hour of puzzles and a group photo when you get out. Karaoke, on the other hand, gives the guest of honour and everyone else a turn in the spotlight. With a larger group, split into teams – the losers prepare the birthday toast. Neither depends on the weather, and both go well with dinner.
7. A birthday with a communist-era twist
For a 40th or 50th, a visit to Podziemne Trasy Szczecina (Szczecin Underground Routes) is a perfect fit. In the shelter beneath the main station, the humorous “Selfie z PRL-em” route (a selfie with communist-era Poland) features sets inspired by the cult film “Miś” and a bar mleczny, a traditional milk bar – the photos are ready-made material for a birthday slideshow. Let them know in advance if you’re coming as a larger group.
8. An active day at Fabryka Wody
Pools, slides, a bowling alley, a climbing wall and a large sauna zone – at Fabryka Wody (the Water Factory) there’s something for everyone. It’s a good idea for a birthday with active friends, and in summer the open-air Arkonka water park is an alternative.
9. A picnic at Jezioro Szmaragdowe
Jezioro Szmaragdowe (Emerald Lake) formed in a flooded chalk quarry and is one of the most beautiful spots on the outskirts of the city. A walk along the paths around the water, a viewpoint and a blanket on the grass make for a relaxed birthday afternoon, especially with family and children.
10. Sunset on Wały Chrobrego
If the birthday falls on a warm evening, start by meeting on Wały Chrobrego. The monumental terrace overlooks the port and Łasztownia, and after dark you’ll see the illuminated dźwigozaury, the port cranes nicknamed “crane-dinosaurs”. On the southern terrace you’ll find Columbus, a restaurant and pub with views over the Oder valley, so you can raise the first toast right there.
Sample surprise birthday plan
- 18:00 – the guests meet at the starting stop and board the tram
- 18:15 – the tram picks up the birthday person; champagne toast
- 18:15–20:00 – a ride through the city with music, cake and birthday wishes
- 20:30 – dinner at a restaurant near the final stop
- 22:30 – an after party on Deptak Bogusława (Bogusław Promenade) for those still going
For a surprise, we’ll be completely discreet and plan the start so that the birthday person doesn’t suspect a thing. The route can take you past Brama Portowa (the Harbour Gate), through plac Rodła (Rodła Square) and over Most Długi (the Long Bridge) across the Oder. You’ll find other occasions on our Szczecin tram party page.
Practical tips
- Booking – book the tram at least 5 working days before the party; the earlier you book, the more dates you can choose from.
- A joint present – a tram ride makes a great gift from friends or family.
- Music – put together a playlist of hits from the birthday person’s younger days.
- A theme – a dress code, such as the 1980s, gives the party character and looks great in photos.
