By day, Bydgoszcz tempts you with museums and walks by the water, but it shows its true character after sunset. Bydgoszcz at night means the lights of tenement houses reflected in the Brda, performances at Opera Nova, the buzz around Stary Rynek (the Old Market Square) and along the Długa Street promenade, and clubs with live music.
If you’re wondering what to do in Bydgoszcz after dark, below you’ll find tried-and-tested ideas – from a gentle stroll to a party until dawn – plus a sample evening plan and a few practical tips.
Choose your kind of evening
Before you head out, think about what kind of night you’re in the mood for. The centre of Bydgoszcz is compact enough to combine several moods in one night, but it’s worth having a plan.
- Relaxed – a walk by the Brda, dinner and a glass of wine with a river view.
- Cultural – the opera, the theatre or a concert, followed by a drink in the centre.
- Party – a tram with music, pubs on Długa Street and a club until morning.
What to do in Bydgoszcz at night
1. A dusk walk by the Brda
The best way to start the evening is a stroll around the Old Town before it gets completely dark. Cross Wyspa Młyńska (Mill Island), stop by the Wenecja Bydgoska (Bydgoszcz Venice) tenements along the Młynówka channel, then walk out onto the Jerzy Sulima-Kamiński Bridge. From the bridge you can see the half-timbered granaries on Grodzka Street and the sculpture Przechodzący przez rzekę (The Man Crossing the River) – a man balancing on a rope above the water. At dusk these are some of the most photogenic spots in the city, and on long summer evenings you may still catch the sunset over the water.
2. Dinner near the Old Market Square
The Old Market Square, with its town hall in the former Jesuit college, is the natural centre of evening life. In the surrounding streets you’ll find restaurants and cafés for every occasion, from a quick dinner before a show to a long feast with a bigger group. If you want a view, choose a place by the Brda – several restaurants and bars make the most of the riverside location. On Fridays and Saturdays, book a table for your group in advance.
3. A performance at Opera Nova
The opera house in a bend of the Brda, recognisable by its distinctive circular sections, is the place for an elegant evening. The programme includes opera, operetta, ballet and musicals, and the building hosts the annual Bydgoszcz Opera Festival. After the show, cross the footbridge to Mill Island – the night-time view of the river is a fine end to the evening, or the start of the rest of the night.
4. Teatr Polski
Fans of drama should check the programme at Teatr Polski (the Polish Theatre), named after Hieronim Konieczka. An evening performance is a good alternative to the clubs, especially when the weather isn’t great for walking, and after the show it’s an easy walk to the bars and restaurants in the centre.
5. Pubs and bars on Długa Street
Długa is one of the oldest streets in Bydgoszcz and a pedestrianised promenade lined with cafés, pubs and galleries. It’s a great place for an evening wander from bar to bar – on the way you’ll also pass the Muzeum Mydła i Historii Brudu (Museum of Soap and History of Dirt), which is worth a visit during the day. With a larger group, plan 2–3 stops and book a table at least at the first one.
6. A gig at a music club
Bydgoszcz has rich musical traditions and several clubs that regularly host live concerts – from jazz and rock to alternative sounds. Check the line-up before you arrive and book tickets, because the smaller venues fill up quickly for popular gigs.
7. A party on a private tram
The most unusual idea for an evening is a club on wheels that takes you through the city at night for two hours. On board there’s a professional sound system and club lighting, and the route can run along Gdańska Street, through Rondo Jagiellonów (Jagiellonian Roundabout) and near the Old Market Square and Mill Island, among other places. The ride can start from almost any tram stop, and we usually agree the final stop in the centre, close to venues for the rest of the night. 8. Bowling, pool or an escape room
If you fancy a bit of competition, start the evening with a few games of bowling or pool, or an hour in an escape room. It’s a good warm-up before a night out and a reliable idea for a rainy evening – the losers buy the first round.
9. A night walk along Gdańska Street
Gdańska, the city’s grandest street, is a long row of tenement houses in Art Nouveau, eclectic and neo-Renaissance styles. In the evening, when the traffic dies down, it’s easier to appreciate the ornate facades and details that get lost in the bustle of the day. A walk towards the Old Town is a good way to end the evening or to get to the next party.
