Poznan at night shows a completely different face from the daytime city. As the tour groups drift away from the town hall, Stary Rynek (the Old Market Square) turns into the city’s biggest cluster of bars and clubs, while in Jeżyce the bistros, theatre seats and tables at restaurants serving food from all over the world start to fill up.
Here’s where to go after dark in both districts, how to combine them into one evening and how to see the city by night from a perspective most locals have never tried.
The Old Market Square after dark
1. The town hall and colourful tenement houses by night
Start with a stroll around the square. The goats on the town hall tower only come out at noon, but in the evening the Renaissance façade and the colourful tenement houses have a completely different, calmer feel. While you’re there, look out for the statue of the Bamberka (the Bamberg Woman), a reminder of the settlers from around Bamberg who were brought to Poznan in the 18th century.
2. Pubs and bars in the tenement houses
The buildings around the square and the side streets leading off it, including Wroniecka and Woźna, are home to pubs, beer bars serving local brews and cocktail bars. Many places have atmospheric cellars, so even on a chilly evening it’s easy to find room for a bigger group – although on Fridays and Saturdays it’s best to book a table.
3. Clubs until the early hours
The area around the Old Market Square is the beating heart of the city’s nightlife. After midnight the action moves to the clubs, which play everything from old hits to electronic music. The simplest plan is to try a few places and stay wherever they’re playing your kind of music.
4. A night-time walk to Ostrów Tumski
When the square gets crowded, take a walk of 15 minutes or so to Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island). In the evening it’s quiet around the cathedral, and from Most Jordana (Jordan Bridge), a footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists, you can see the cathedral towers rising above the Cybina river. It’s a good spot for a group photo before the rest of the night, and if you’re up for it, you can carry on to Śródka, where the famous three-dimensional mural covers the wall of a tenement house.
Jeżyce in the evening
5. Dinner in Jeżyce’s bistros
Jeżyce is where people from Poznan go for good food. On Kościelna, Szamarzewskiego, Dąbrowskiego and Jackowskiego streets you’ll find bistros, tapas bars and restaurants serving Italian, Thai, Korean and Japanese food. At weekends, book a table, especially for a larger group.
6. A show at Teatr Nowy
Teatr Nowy im. Tadeusza Łomnickiego (the Tadeusz Łomnicki New Theatre) has been performing in an Art Nouveau tenement house on Dąbrowskiego Street since the 1920s and is regarded as one of the leading stages in Poland. An evening performance makes a great prelude to a late dinner, and it’s worth checking the programme in advance.
7. Rialto cinema
This intimate cinema on Dąbrowskiego Street mixes independent films with more mainstream releases and now and then hosts meet-the-actor evenings. If you’d like a quieter night, a film at the Rialto followed by dinner nearby is a tried-and-tested combination.
8. A walk through Art Nouveau Jeżyce
Between Rynek Jeżycki (Jeżyce Market Square) and Słowackiego, Mickiewicza and Roosevelta streets stand richly decorated tenement houses and villas from the early 20th century. After dark, under the street lamps, their balconies, figures and ornaments look like a film set – and fans of Jeżycjada, the much-loved Polish series of novels set in the district, will recognise familiar addresses.
Between the Old Market Square and Jeżyce
9. An evening at the Zamek Culture Centre
The monumental Imperial Castle, built in the early 20th century for Kaiser Wilhelm II, comes alive with culture in the evenings: Centrum Kultury Zamek (the Zamek Culture Centre) hosts concerts, film screenings and exhibitions here. The castle stands on Święty Marcin Street, roughly halfway between Jeżyce and the Old Market Square, so it’s easy to work into your evening route.
10. By the Warta river
On warm evenings, head down to the river. The Wartostrada, a path for walkers and cyclists, runs along the Warta, and it’s easy to find a spot there for a quiet chat away from the noise of the clubs. From here it’s also a short way to Ostrów Tumski and Śródka.
The night from a different perspective
Want to see the city after dark in a way most locals never have? Book a private tram party. The vintage carriage has a professional sound system, club lighting fills the interior, and we plan the route around your group – it might run through Rondo Kaponiera (the Kaponiera Roundabout) and along Święty Marcin Street all the way to the area around Ostrów Tumski. A welcome drink and a red carpet entrance are waiting for you, and a party host keeps the evening running smoothly. It’s a great idea for a birthday, a stag do or a get-together with friends – you’ll find the details on the TramParty Poznan page.

Practical tips
- Bookings – on Fridays and Saturdays, tables at popular places on the square and in Jeżyce go fast, especially for groups.
- Getting around – Jeżyce and the Old Market Square are a quarter of an hour or so apart by tram. After midnight, check the night public transport services or order a taxi.
- Dress code – most bars are relaxed, but some clubs have a door policy, so leave your sportswear at the hotel.
- Weather – on a rainy or freezing evening it’s easy to move indoors: to the theatre, the cinema, the cellar bars around the square or a private tram.
